80 miles

Member highlights:

The concept was a recreation of a Revolutionary War battle where the British Redcoats challenged a handful of Colonists.  This time the battle was to be in the village of La Conner, WA.  The British were represented by the BC Loyalist Regiment (aka the British Columbia Region of the RROC) led by “Colonel” David Baron.  The Colonists were represented by the PNWR Rebellious Colonist Regiment and led by (real) Lt. Colonel Terrence Saxe.  As before, the Redcoats outnumbered the Colonists.  As before, the Redcoats had drilled, practiced, and honed their skills for several years in the peculiar form of warfare to be employed. The stage was set for a massacre.  Yet, once again a bunch of rag-tag Colonists were successful in holding the line and preserving the right for the sleepy little village of La Conner to continue to fly “Old Glory” above their Post Office (at least M-F but I’m not sure about Saturday since Saturday delivery is about to be curtailed).

The Keys to the City and the Sacred Sword were safe once again.

100 miles

Member highlights:

In what is becomming an annual event, the members of the BC Region and the PNWR gathered on Canadian territory this time in the City of Victora for a contest of wills, skills, and luck to determine the bragging rights, and the honor of claiming the sacred Ceremonial Sword and Key to the City first provided last year at the joint meet in La Conner.  Canadian tour leader, Jim Walters,  provided a staggering set of driving instructions with exact mileages specified between turns to travel from Merridale Cidery to his farm and shop on Cobble Hill Road.  By Map Quest this is a distance of a mere 2.16 miles, but the way Jim routed us it took all blinkin' afternoon.  In addition we were instructed to select three Scrabble tiles from his bag.  Three more tiles would be provided along the way at Whippletree Junction.

The challenge was:  1)  Get to Jim’s place;  2)  Answer silly questions, and (3)  Spell word(s) with the Scrabble tiles.  The first observation on this trek was that not all PMC’s have calibrated or similarly registering odometers.  The first turn saw Rolls Royce and Bentley motorcars entering and coming out of the woods from all directions ….. and sure enough, it got worse.

Finally, all were back together for the major announcement.   I’d like to say it was close.  I’d like to say that the Canadian spelling of the words had an influence on the scores.  I’d like to say that no one forgot to turn in their answers to the questions.  I’d like to say that no one lost their Scrabble tiles.  But I cannot.  So the Ceremonial Sword and the Key to the City of Victoria remained behind in BC.

But just wait until 2013!

2000 miles (mostly on a flatbed)

Member highlights:

The 2011 RROC National Meet, “the fount of all knowledge Rolls-Royce and Bentley”, we couldn’t miss it….Lake Tahoe wasn’t so far.  But as we started southward our world was heating up….. temp was about 95 when our first FTP raised its ugly head.  Our '39 Wraith started to misfire and stumble …. and finally stopped.  The group stopped with us and pondered Wraith’s innards…….was it vapor lock, an ignition snag, a carb blockage…..who knew??  We stumbled & lurched our way into Alturas at the blinding speed of 5-10 mph…and coasted into the motel parking lot…… how humiliating for Wraith!  Some of the greatest mechanical minds on the caravan again puzzled over Wraith’s innards……. the verdict was vapor lock & let him cool.

It didn't get any better  all the way to Tahoe and back.

It was while we were on the return leg that it occurred to us that it would be much nicer to call a flatbed from the comfort of our motel room than along the highway in 100+ degree heat…… so we did.  We figure we spent about half the trip on a flatbed……. but we did get super mileage!  We rented another car to get home……this car didn’t misfire or die either!

Bottom line = bad coil. Trivial yet totally fatal.  AARGH.

2010 Oregon Adventure Tour

Member highlights:
The RROC sponsored “Oregon Experience” tour followed a circular path to encounter various aspects of the Oregon Experience.  Here we found the realms of the native tribes, the explorer, the pioneer, the logger, the fisherman, the river bar pilot, the farmer, the vintner, the mountaineer, and the windsurfer.

It was, of course, only a snippet of the real Oregon experience.  Overall driving distance was ~600 miles and even for those who thought they knew this State it was full of surprises.

In 2007 Mark Johnson and his wife Therese shipped their 1948 Silver Wraith to Georgia to have a major engine overhaul and other mechanical repairs done. The car was then driven to the RROC National meet in Toronto and then across the country back to Vashon Island.  Here is a photo montage of this epic journey.  .
